MALAYSIA SHOULD FOCUS ON ENERGY EFFIENCY SECTOR, SAYS CAMCO MD

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19 (Bernama) — Malaysia, as a major producer of palm oil  in the world, should focus on the energy efficiency sector as it has huge potential, said Camco Southeast Asia managing director, Kent Carter.

He said there is great potential for the development of Renewable Energy  (RE) in Malaysia because there is plentiful supply of feedstock for RE projects.

“There are also many professional developers who can contribute to the RE development.  “It is estimated that the RE which comes from biomass and other  energy efficiency projects, can contribute US$139 billion from 2010-2030.

The greenest city of all?

Abu Dhabi’s most innovative project is the creation of a brand new city. Not just any city, either. This one is billed as the world’s first carbon-neutral, zero-waste city, powered entirely by renewable energy.

The estimated $22 billion plan for Masdar City was hatched in 2006. Construction is under way, with the first residents — university students — expected to move in by the end of the year.

Mexico City’s lofty goal helps clear the air

Mexico City, shown Feb. 7, 2007, is closing a huge landfill site to ease smog. Poor air quality is also a problem for Toronto in summer, shown May 27, 2005.

Once known as a smog-choked place to avoid, Mexico City has seen its air quality improve drastically since the early ’90s.

But the air still poses a threat to those who live and work there.

Now, the most extensive municipal air quality measure ever undertaken, with a price tag of $6 billion (U.S.), promises to make Mexico City the model of environmental rehabilitation.

City of London covered in smog

Londoners are having up to 10 years wiped off their lives by poor air quality, a leading academic warned today.

Professor Frank Kelly, an environmental health expert from King’s College, London, stressed that an estimated 3,000 to 5,000 people in the capital were dying early each year due to pollution.

“In the worst cases, they could be dying up to 10 years early,” he said.

Corrective actions should be taken to save environment

There is need to evolve time-bound strategies to resolve challenges like climate change, stagnating agriculture yields, decreasing farm lands, water pollution and degradation of environment, Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra said here Sunday.

“We are facing many environmental challenges. Rapidly receding arctic sea ice and snow cover is causing a damage of nearly USD 370 billion every year and it would reach USD 2.4 to 24 trillion by 2050 in terms of damages incurred by various sectors like agriculture and real estate,” he said.

Tougher smog standards needed

?In an effort to improve air quality and protect people with asthma and other respiratory disorders, the Environmental Protection Agency announced on Jan. 25 that it will begin to limit nitrogen oxide, a chemical responsible for smog formation.

In general, any standards that impose limits on air pollution levels are beneficial for citizens, especially given that the EPA hasn’t updated its standards since 1971. The new proposed limit would be 100 parts per billion.

As reported in a Jan. 25 Chicago Tribune article, the EPA measured Chicago’s nitrogen oxide content at 116 parts per billion. Other notorious cities such as San Diego and Los Angeles averaged at 87 and 84 parts per billion, respectively.
